CU WOMEN TIE RPI

November 16, 2003

Troy, NY - Carolynn Zidek (Chicago, IL) scored her first goal of the season midway through the third period to lift the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team to a 2-2 overtime tie against Rensselaer at Houston Field House on Sunday in the final game of a seven-game road trip, which included three consecutive games this weekend, for the Golden Knights.

Despite dominating play and holding a 48-12 shot advantage over the Engineers, Clarkson trailed 2-0 early in the second period. Melissa Marshall (Oak Lawn, IL) started the Knights’ rally with her second goal of the year, scoring at 7:36 of the middle frame with Kate Allgood (Toronto, ONT) and Ashley Shaidle  (Hudson, OH) assisting.  Zidek tied it up at 11:55 of the third with Kristi Shaw (Bellville, ONT) and Brenna Louey (Brooks, ALB) picking up their first points of the season assisting on the goal, which helped snapped a three-game losing skid for the Green and Gold.

In a fairly evenly played first period, Rensselaer scored first on Julie Welte’s power-play marker at 15:29 to take a 1-0 lead after the opening 20 minutes. The Knights picked up their play over the following 45 minutes, outshooting the Engineers 36-2 for the remainder of the game. Rensselaer, however, scored on its only shot of the second period, an unassisted goal by Deanna Dougherty, to stake a 2-0 advantage.

As they did throughout the game, Clarkson controlled overtime outshooting Rensselaer 4-0 in the extra session, but could not put away the winning goal.

Clarkson’s Kira McDonald (Pickering, ONT) made nine of her 10 saves in the first period. Rosina Schiff posted 46 stops for Rensselaer. The Knights were 0-of-4 on the power play, while Rensselaer was 1-of-4 with the advantage.

At 5-4-2, Clarkson is now off until November 28-29 when it hosts Colgate and Cornell at Cheel Arena.
