Potsdam, NY - Freshman goaltender Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) made 28 saves to pick up her third victory of the season as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team closed out a four-game home stand with a 2-1 victory over Bowdoin College Sunday afternoon at Clarkson’s Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights, who improved to 7-6-2 with their second straight win, opened the scoring at the 15:35 mark of the first period when Jill Nolan (Labrador, NF) came streaking down the left side and beat Polar Bears (2-3-1) goaltender Nathalie Morgan (Dieppe, NB) to her left pad side. The unassisted tally was Nolan’s sixth of the season.
Clarkson added a second goal when Carolynn Zidek (Chicago, IL) scored her second goal of the season on a rebound in front of the net. Sophomore center Kate Allgood (Toronto, ONT) was awarded her team-leading eighth assist when Morgan saved her initial shot.
After pulling the goaltender in the final minute of the third period, Bowdoin put its first goal on the scoreboard when senior forward Gillian McDonald (Hudson, QUE) knocked in a loose puck on a scramble in front to pull the Polar Bears within a goal with just 56 seconds remaining. Cathie Quinlan (St. John’s, NFLD) and Meghan Gillis (Whycocomagh, NS) were each awarded assists on the goal, each their second of the season. Bowdoin peppered Hansen in the final minute with seven shots, but couldn’t tally another goal to tie the score.
Hansen had a light first period, needing to make just five saves, but was challenged by 12 shots from Bowdoin in the second period before making 11 more saves in the third. Morgan made 28 saves in net for the Polar Bears.
Clarkson returns to action the opening weekend of 2004 when they visit Findlay University on January 2nd and 3rd in Ohio.
