Potsdam, NY - Northeastern scored the lone goal of the first period but the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team stormed back to win their Saturday afternoon match up with the Huskies 5-2 at Cheel Arena. Sophomore Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) scored her first and second goal of the season and assisted on another as the Golden Knights improved to 6-2-1 overall. Northeastern, meanwhile, falls to 1-7-1 and is in the midst of a four-game losing streak.
Colleen Sanborn put the Huskies on the board with an unassisted goal midway through the first period and Northeastern took a 1-0 lead into intermission despite being out shot 8-6 by the Golden Knights.
The Knights would not trail for long as Beazer scored her first goal of the young season on a pass from sophomore Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) at the 4:11 mark of the second period. Just over five minutes later, junior Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year, unassisted, after beating a defender one-on-one and putting it past Northeastern goalie Marisa Hourihan for a 2-1 advantage. Clarkson struck once more in the period, just forty-nine seconds later, on a power play goal by Morrison. Shaidle sent a pass to Beazer who had her shot deflected, but Morrison was able to convert on her wrist shot to stake Clarkson to a 3-1 lead. Northeastern answered with a power play goal of their own when Crystal Rochon scored her fourth goal of the season with assists from Lindsay Snider and Nikki Petrich.
With the score 3-2 entering the third period, the Golden Knights tacked on two more insurance goals, both on the power play. Sophomore Amanda Dittmer (Chatham, ONT) assisted freshman Micheleen Devine (Medicine Hat, ALB) on her fourth goal of the 2005-2006 campaign, a shot initially deflected by Hourihan that just crossed the goal line. With just 6:42 remaining, Beazer struck again for her second goal of the game after a series of shots in front of the Northeastern net. Shaidle and junior Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT) assisted on the tally.
Clarkson, while out shooting Northeastern 42-10, converted on three of eight power plays while the Huskies were successful on their single man-advantage of the game. Clarkson will host Providence College tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.
