KNIGHTS POST STRONG DEFENSIVE EFFORT IN LOSS TO SLU

January 24, 2006

Canton, NY - Held to fewer than 10 field goals in each half, St. Lawrence struggled against the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team, but the Golden Knights offense didn't fair particularly well either as the Green and Gold fell to the Saints 53-35 Tuesday night.

The Golden Knights dropped to 4-12 overall and 0-5 in the Liberty League while St. Lawrence improved it record to 11-5 overall and 5-0 in the conference slate. Clarkson continues its road trip this weekend when it visits Hamilton and William Smith.

In the opening minutes, neither team could muster much offense as the Golden Knights did not get on the scoreboard until the 15:20 mark of the first half. Through the first 16 minutes of action, Clarkson only had seven points, but still trailed by a single-digit margin after a pair of free throws from Sarah Wesner (Sidney, NY). The second half saw the Saints hold the Knights at bay with just occasional spurts by Clarkson to put itself  within striking distance.

Wesner finished with a game-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds. Senior guard Erika Fritjofson (East Barre, VT) continued her climb up Clarkson's all-time scoring list with 10 points, putting her within a single point of becoming only the 18th player in Golden Knights' history to record 700 career points.

Kimberly Sikule led the Saints with 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals.
