Herons Late Goal Finishes Win Over Clarkson

October 7, 2006

Potsdam, NY - Laura Burnett-Kurie scored a late goal and assisted on the opening score as William Smith defeated the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team 2-0 in a Liberty League contest Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights dropped their fifth straight Liberty League contest to fall to 5-7 overall and 0-5 in conference while William Smith improved to 8-3 and 5-0 in league play. Clarkson plays non-league opponents St. John Fisher and Ithaca College next weekend.

William Smith carried the play in the opening half, but could not pick up a score despite a pair of solid chances early on. With less than eight minutes remaining Katelyn Tyson put the Herons on the scoreboard when her shot trickled through the hands of Clarkson goalkeeper Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY). Clarkson's opportunities were minimized as the team took just one shot in the first half.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were played mostly in the midfield as neither team could muster great chances on goal. Finally, Hannah Vaughn was able to sneak past the Clarkson defense and sent a through ball to Burnett-Kurie, who carried the ball in and chipped a shot over Emlaw for the second score at 81:56.

William Smith out shot Clarkson 14-3 in the game and held a modest 2-1 advantage in corner kicks. Nikki Dudley made one save, coming in the final minute, to record her fourth shutout of the season while Meagan Emlaw made six saves.

The Herons have won all 20 meetings against Clarkson, but this was only the third time in the series' history that the Golden Knights came within two goals of the regional power.
