Union Slows Up Knights Early Season Charge

September 22, 2006

Schenectady, NY - Two first-half goals and a deep roster helped Union College confine the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to catch-up play as the Golden Knights dropped the Liberty League conference opener 2-0 Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-3 overall and 0-1 in league play. Clarkson returns to action on Saturday when it visits Skidmore. Union improved to 3-2-1 and 1-0.

Less than two minutes into the game, Stephanie Cronan tallied the first goal of the contest for the Dutchmen when she carried the ball up and beat Clarkson goalkeeper Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY). Fifteen minutes later at the 17:09 mark, Caitlin Cuozzo sent a high-arcing shot from 10 yards out into the right corner for the final score of the game. Chelsea Hargis and Elizabeth Ryan each picked up assists for Union.

The Golden Knights mustered little offense in the game, but shut down Union in the final 73 minutes as well. Clarkson trailed in shots 18-3 and was edged in corner kicks 12-1. Emlaw, the two-time defending Liberty League and ECAC Upstate Defender of the Week, made five saves for Clarkson. Mia Simone and Kaitlin Graham combined to make three saves for Union.
