Union Closes Weekend with Sweep of North Country with 4-0 Win Over Knights

October 6, 2007

Potsdam, NY - Lightning delayed the start of Saturday's game, but the slick track and gloomy conditions didn't deter Union's offense as the Dutchwomen shut down the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team 4-0 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-7-2 overall and 0-4-1 in conference play while 24th-ranked Union improved to 10-3 and 2-2 in the league. Clarkson takes a break from the Liberty League for two weeks and will face Potsdam State and Cazenovia in the next nine days.

A near 40-minute delay because of lightning in the area wasn't enough to slow down Union as the Dutchwomen controlled play from the start. Allison Cuozzo connected from Caitlin Cuozzo at the close of the 16th minute to put Union up 1-0 and the Dutchwomen waited only another seven minutes before scoring again when Katie Weinstein's shot was mishandled by Clarkson keeper Meagan Emlaw (Norfolk, NY). The bounding shot caught some english off the wet grass and slipped off her gloves into the back of the net.

The second half began with Caitin Cuozzo gaining her fourth point of the day when she scored a goal at the 51:30 mark after assisting on the first two Union goals. Ashley Brown took a shot from the corner of the penalty box and the initial save couldn't be totally corralled by Emlaw. Cuozzo picked up the loose ball and tapped in the shot for a 3-0 Union lead. Less than 10 minutes later, conference scoring leader Katie McLean tallied her 12th goal of the season when she chipped a shot over Emlaw.

Union owned a 21-2 advantage in shot and a 6-1 lead in corner kick opportunities. Emlaw finished with eight saves through 65 minutes before being relieved by freshman Stephanie Collins (Colton, NY), who didn't need to make a save through the final 25 minutes. Melissa McDonald and Mia Simone each played a half for Union, but did not need to make a save in sharing the shutout.
