Knights Drop Liberty League Opener to Dutchwomen

January 18, 2008

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) produced her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team came up short in its Liberty League conference opener against Union on Friday, 74-39, at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-10 overall and 0-1 in conference, while Union evened both is overall mark and Liberty League record at 6-6 and 1-1. Clarkson hosts Skidmore on Saturday, while Union travels to St. Lawrence.

The Dutchwomen started the first five minutes with an offensive flourish that put them on pace for more than 100 points in the game, shooting out to a 16-6 lead in the first five minutes of the contest. Clarkson combated that run with a 9-0 run of its own to cut the advantage to just a single point, 16-15 at 10:30. However, that small margin was fleeting for the Knights as Union scored 12 unanswered points over the next four minutes to take a commanding double-digit lead.

Maria Tobin led all scorers in the first half, leading the Dutchwomen with 11 points in just 11 minutes of action. Talitha Linden-Darrow and Michelle Rogers also contributed seven points for Union. Michelle Reddinger was the leader for Clarkson, producing 8 points and 8 rebounds, while shooting 4-for-6 from the floor.

The Knights’ defense couldn’t restrain Union in the second half either, as the team was able to get numerous good looks on the inside and held a commanding 36-19 lead in scoring in the second half. The Dutchwomen out rebounded Clarkson 44-27, and shot 50 percent from the floor (27-for-54) in the game. The Knights struggled at 28.6 percent (16-for-56 from the field).

Maria Tobin led all scorers with 14 points for the Dutchwomen, compiling her scoring in just 20 minutes. Lauren McCormick added 11 points, in 16 minutes, off the bench.

Reddinger was the only Clarkson player to reach double figures with 12 points and 12 rebounds, though Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) added eight points off the bench.
