Thoroughbreds Late Run Sends Knights to Loss

January 19, 2008

Potsdam, NY – A 21-3 run over the final eight minutes turned a four-point lead into a 14-point loss for the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team as Skidmore College came into Alumni Gymnasium and left with a 63-49 win over the Golden Knights on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights dropped to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play, and meet St. Lawrence University on Tuesday in Canton. Skidmore improved to 8-5 overall and 2-1.

In the opening minutes it appeared as if the Golden Knights shooting woes would carry over from Friday, as Skidmore jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three minutes. After a timeout by the Knights, the team regrouped and went on a 19-6 charge over the next 10 minutes to take a 19-13 lead with seven minutes remaining in the half.

The inside play of sophomore center Michelle Reddinger (Baldwinsville, NY) proved to be a valuable commodity for the Knights, as she controlled play in the paint with 13 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks. She also shot 5-for-5 from the free throw line and only misfired on one of her five field goal attempts. Sophomore guard Sharlyn Harper was Skidmore’s leader, scoring a team-high seven points to go along with her four steals.

The two teams went back and forth for much of the first 12 minutes of the second half, with Clarkson maintaining its four-point lead that it held at halftime. Skidmore’s defense caused numerous turnovers with full-court pressure and Clarkson struggled to find any offensive groove, shooting just 27.3 percent (6-for-22 from the floor) in the second half.

Dana Leonard led the Thoroughbreds with 16 points, making six of her seven free throw attempts. Sharlyn Harper and Laura Michel each added in nine points, with Harper making five steals and Michel dishing out four assists.

For the Knights, Reddinger scored a career-high 17 points, shooting a flawless 9-for-9 from the line. She also added seven blocks and eight rebounds. Alicia Chace (Cortland, NY) fell short of a triple-double, finishing with 8 points, 7 rebounds and 7 steals.
