Saints Defeat Knights, 83-56

January 20, 2009

Canton, NY – Three shutout runs at vital times in the contest proved to be the difference for St. Lawrence Tuesday night as the Saints defeated the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team 83-56 at Burkman Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-9 overall and remained winless in Liberty League action, while St. Lawrence moved to 9-4 and 2-1 in conference games. Clarkson continues its five-game road trip this weekend when it visits Vassar and Rensselaer.

In the first half, the Golden Knights were able to stay in the contest with 3-point field goals at timely intervals; however, St. Lawrence used a 7-0 run early on and then a 9-0 run midway through the half to take a double-digit lead. A key for the Saints was an overwhelming advantage in free throw attempts, as St. Lawrence shot 13-for-15 from the line while Clarkson was held to only four attempts, making one shot.

The second half saw another run by the Saints prove to be the difference as St. Lawrence went on an 11-0 run to push their lead over the 30-point mark. From that point, the Knights played evenly and even cut into the advantage, but couldn’t push the Saints lead below 25.

Sophomore Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) scored a team-high 16 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the floor, including four long-range shots. Classmate Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, NY) contributed 10 more points and grabbed six rebounds. Junior transfer Jessica Brody (Phoenix, AZ) grabbed eight rebounds, including six on the offensive end, in her first significant action of the season since returning from shoulder surgery.

Katie Palmer led all scorers with 19 points and 11 boards for St. Lawrence. Katherine Edgerton added 13 points while Lauren Sischo produced 11 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds.
For the game, St. Lawrence shot 25-for-35 from the free throw line, while Clarkson was just 10-for-17 on foul shots.
