Potsdam, NY – Despite a fast start from the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team, St. Lawrence used steady inside play to get to the free throw line, and put away the Golden Knights late, 65-54, in Liberty League action Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-10 overall and 2-7 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence improved to 15-4 and remained unbeaten in league contests at 11-0. Clarkson and St. Lawrence will take on RIT and William Smith this weekend, hosting the pair in the North Country.

Unlike the last two times that the teams met, Clarkson was able to get on the scoreboard right away, picking up a basket on its first possession of the contest. The Knights owned the first portion of the game, taking a seven-point lead midway through the half, 15-8. After trading 3-pointers, Clarkson still was up by seven, but St. Lawrence got back on track offensively and was able to cut into the Knights’ lead with free throws. Eventually, the Saints came all the way back on a jumper from Adriana Spicer with less than three minutes to go in the half, as St. Lawrence ended the first period with an 8-0 run.

Freshman Raeanne Clabeaux (New Woodstock, NY) scored four points and added four rebounds and three assists for the Knights, while classmate Brooke Butkovsky (Monroe, CT) tossed in seven points and four rebounds. For St. Lawrence, Spicer was 4-for-5 from the field for nine points, while Kelly Legg added a basket and five rebounds.

In the second half, St. Lawrence continued where it left off offensively, but this time worked the offensive glass with tenacity, providing second chances while limiting Clarkson’s opportunities. The Saints were able to change their three-point advantage at the half into a 10-point lead just six minutes into the second period, and though Clarkson didn’t allow the Saints to run away with the game, St. Lawrence continued to use a solid inside-outside game to extend its lead. Down by double figures, Clarkson began using a full-court press that created a hand full of turnovers and got the Knights back to within eight, but free throws down the stretch provided the Saints with an 11-point cushion at the completion of the game.

Butkovsky finished with 14 points and eight rebounds, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor, while Clabeaux tossed in 12 points and seven rebounds. Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) also added 10 points and eight rebounds, as well as four steals.

For St. Lawrence, Adriana Spicer and Kara McDuffee each scored 12 points, while Casey Capello added 10 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Spicer also chipped in four steals as St. Lawrence forced 28 turnovers.
