Dutchwomen Slide by Knights 1-0 in Overtime

Schenectady, NY – In a hard-fought defensive battle, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team forced overtime before being edged by the Union College Dutchwomen 1-0 on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights slip to 3-7-0 on the year and remain on the road to take on the Rensselaer Engineers tomorrow evening at 5:00 pm. The win improves the Dutchwomen to 4-3-0 and they will host St. Lawrence tomorrow afternoon.

The defense was put to the test in the first half as the Dutchwomen controlled the ball, but the Clarkson backline stood strong and kept Union off the scoreboard in the first half. Playing in her hometown, Megan Strijek (Schenectady, NY) attempted three shots for the Green and Gold in the half.

The second half proved to be evenly matched, as both teams attempted 10 shots. Nikki Carfi (Liverpool, NY) fired six shots, including two on goal, throughout the half. Freshman goalkeeper Sierra Spring (Saratoga Springs, NY), stepping in for an injured Kim Kenline (Akron, NY), turned away six shots in the second half to keep the game knotted at 0-0 heading into overtime.

Early in the extra session, Union was able to pressure the Clarkson defense, and a deflection went into the net for an own-goal to give the Dutchwomen the win.

"I was very proud of our efforts," said head coach Sarah Raymond. "We played some great soccer in the second half to even up the game. [Spring] played with enormous poise and talent. She made some great saves."

Spring came up big for the defense as she stopped eight shots in the final 61 minutes of the game after replacing Kenline.
