Loggins Sparks Opening Day Win for Clarkson

Box Score
Madison, NJ - Though the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team trailed for most of the game against Drew University Saturday afternoon, the Golden Knights picked the right time to be ahead, as junior Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) drained a 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining in the game to help lift the Green and Gold to a season-opening 78-74 win for new head coach Maureen Webster in the Rose City Classic Tournament.

Clarkson will now play in the championship game of the tournament at 4:00 pm on Sunday afternoon.

The Knights immediately fell behind in the opening minutes of the game as Drew rushed out to a 10-point advantage (16-6) in the first six-plus minutes of the contest, but following a timeout, Clarkson was able to soften that deficit down to one point in less than three minutes. After a Loggins lay in with 2:39 remaining, Clarkson had its first lead of the game, but quickly found itself back down by three points at the break.

Only twice in the first 19 minutes of the second half did Clarkson have an advantage (47-46 at 13:58, 57-55 at 10:28), but the Knights would never find themselves in such a precarious predicament as in the first half. The biggest deficit late in the game was a five-point edge for the Rangers at the 4:28 mark, but Clarkson rallied back to within two points in the waning moments. With 1:06 to go in the game, Loggins buried a 3-pointer to give Clarkson a lead it would never relinquish. Alyssia Marsal (Clifton Park, NY) made a key lay up with 13 seconds to go and Loggins made a free throw in the final seconds for the final tally.

Loggins finished with a game-best 25 points, shooting 10-for-16 from the field, and added 12 rebounds, three assists and four steals in 29 minutes. Sophomore Katelyn Curtis (Leicester, NY) recorded 15 points (6-for-10 from the floor) in just 22 minutes of action, also chipping in eight boards, three assists and three blocks, while classmate Alyssia Marsal also had 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting. Freshman Madison Shea (Clifton Park, NY) had a solid first outing as a collegian, scoring eight points on 4-for-6 shooting to go along with four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists.

For Drew, Hannah Miller scored 23 points, shooting 7-for-18 from the field, while Courtney Stephens and Breana Wilson each had 14 points. Wilson made the majority of her points on free throws (7-for-8), but also had 12 turnovers. The Rangers made the most of their free throws shooting 23-for-26 from the line.
