Knights Denied Against St. Lawrence, 78-60

Potsdam, NY - Another huge game from Kara McDuffee of St. Lawrence University put the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team on its heels in the second half as the Saints took a small lead at the half and turned it into a 78-60 victory Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 17-7 overall and 10-5 in the Liberty League and they are still vying for a playoff position with games remaining throughout the conference this weekend. St. Lawrence had already clinched a playoff berth, and improved to 19-5 overall and 13-2 in league games.

Things started off slow in the first half for both teams as it was just 8-8 nine minutes into the contest. From that point, the two teams jockeyed back and forth, with Clarkson taking its first lead at the 4:45 mark (18-15) on a 3-pointer from Cara Manfredi. St. Lawrence quickly tied it, but two more baskets by Manfredi in the next few minutes each gave the Knights brief leads. A Manfredi lay up at 2:14 pushed the Knights up 27-26, but St. Lawrence scored the final seven points of the half, including a jumper by McDuffee with three seconds to go in the half.

St. Lawrence had a small lead to start the second period, but a pair of free throws from Alyssia Marsal at 15:42 tied the game up 35-35. In the next three minutes, St. Lawrence used an 11-0 run to take a double digit lead, and though the Knights pulled back to within single digits right after a timeout, it would be the last time that the Saints would lead by fewer than double figures. Clarkson was within 10 on a couple of occasions, but down the stretch, the Saints kept finding hot shooters from the perimeter to keep the Knights from making a consistent comeback.

Manfredi finished with 20 points and Ashley Loggins added in 11 points, going 5-for-7 from the field. St. Lawrence buried 11 3-pointers in the game, led by Jenny Scudder's 6-for-8 performance from distance, as she scored a game-high 24 points in just 27 minutes off the bench. McDuffee had 16 points and 23 rebounds, including 14 in the first half, and Allison Cady added in 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
