Knights Earn First Liberty League Playoff Berth with Win at Skidmore

Saratoga Springs, NY - Junior Ashley Loggins hit a 3-pointer with less than 90 seconds to go and the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team held host Skidmore to just two points in the final seven minutes to gain a 71-58 victory and a Liberty League playoff berth for the first time in the decade-long history of the conference.

The Golden Knights finished off the regular season with a record of 18-7 overall and 11-5 in the Liberty League, creating a three-way tie for second behind first-place St. Lawrence (13-3). Via the tiebreakers, Skidmore will still enjoy the second seed, while Clarkson earned the third seed. Union College picked up a win on Sunday and gained the fourth seed. Clarkson will head right back to Skidmore this week for the opening round of the Liberty League Tournament.

The first time around when the two teams played, Skidmore was able use an early second half run to gain a nine-point win, though the game wasn't really that close in the second half. After yet another back-and-forth first half, this time it was the Golden Knights who were able to use a few modest runs to pick up the win. Clarkson gained its first lead of the second half at 16:37 (43-42), and though the game was tied at 45-45, Clarkson would never trail again for the remainder of the contest. The Knights led by seven points midway through the period (55-48, 9:53), and Skidmore pulled back to within three points on two occasions. However, Clarkson wouldn't allow the Thoroughbreds to tie the game, as Cara Manfredi nailed a 3-pointer to lift the Knights to a six-point lead, and just when it appeared as if Skidmore might rally, Loggins hit a 3-pointer with 1:21 to go to cinch the victory. Skidmore scored just two points in the final seven-plus minutes, an Angela Botiba basket with 1:49 to go, while Clarkson had 12 points in that stretch.

Clarkson shot just 32.9% from the floor, but made a strong effort on the glass (23 offensive rebounds) and took great care of the ball (only six turnovers) to make up for the deficiency. Even more importantly, Clarkson shot 39.3% from the 3-point line with 11 makes from the arc. Loggins finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals and freshman Devin Sorell tossed in 15 points. Cara Manfredi also scored 11 points, while Brooke Butkovsky excelled on defense with three blocks and five steals in just 20 minutes of action. For Skidmore, Angela Botiba had a game-high 17 points on 8-for-15 shooting and Molly McLaughlin produced 14 points, six rebounds and four assists.
