Knights Sweep Waynesburg to Start 2-0 for First Time Since 2009

Winter Haven, FL - Juniors Greg Jasek and Ian Castle combined to allow just a single run in 14 innings as the Clarkson University Baseball team swept a pair of games from Waynesburg as the Golden Knights started 2-0 for the first time since the 2009 season.

Clarkson earned a 2-1 win in the opener with runs in the final two innings and then gained a 5-0 victory when Ian Castle spun a one-hitter and allowed only a single ball to be hit to the outfield. The Knights, at 2-0, will face Oneonta State in a doubleheader tomorrow morning, while the Jackets dropped to 2-7,

In the opener, the Knights had just one hit through the first five innings. Anthony Padrazo started the sixth inning with a single but got picked off and Connor Dietrich grounded out, making it appear as if the sixth would be another scoreless inning. With two outs, John Coleman drew a walk and then scampered all the way home on a single by Greg Jasek to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead. Waynesburg responded with a run in the bottom half of the sixth with a two-out double to the left-center gap, but the tie was shortlived. In the top of the seventh, Dom Pirro stroked a one-out double to right-center and a groundout later Tim Beninati lofted a single to left to plate Pirro. In the bottom half of the inning with runners on the corners and one out, first baseman Nolan Driscoll fielded a grounder and decided not to go home to cut the tying run home, instead starting a 3-6-3 double play to end the game.

Clarkson had just four hits in the game, but John Coleman reached twice with a single and a walk. Jasek allowed just one run in seven innings, scattering nine hits through seven frames, but benefiting from three double plays.

In game two, Ian Castle came out mowing through the Waynesburg lineup, allowing just an infield single in the second inning that was knocked down by Coleman and nearly gathered in for an out across the diamond. After that hit, Castle only allowed a lineout to leave the infield as he cruised with groundouts and a hanful of strikeouts. Clarkson was more fortunate on offense, scoring twice in the fourth and three more times in the fifth. Chris Miller doubled to right-center with one out in the fourth and Pirro sent him home with a double that was blown out of the reach of the Waynesburg centerfielder. Matt Jenack followed with a single to right-center to score the second run. In the fifth inning Connor Martin opened with a double and was sent home by a double to the left-center gap by Paul Ludden. Coleman then tripled down the first base line to plate Ludden, and Coleman then raced home on a passed ball for the fifth run.

The doubleheader sweep was the first for the Knights on opening day since they took care of SUNY Cobleskill 12-1 and 4-3 back in 2009 at an adjacent field in Winter Haven, FL.
