Knights Fall for First Time in 2015, 3-1 Versus Fitchburg State

Winter Haven, FL - Through five games the Clarkson University Baseball team had never trailed an inning, but that streak along with its season-opening five-game winning streak came to an end on Sunday morning when the Golden Knights dropped a 3-1 decision to Fitchburg State at the Chain O' Lakes Complex.

The Golden Knights fell to 5-1 overall with the loss while Fitchburg State moved back over .500 at 5-4 overall. Clarkson will get a day off before returning for a day of practice and consecutive doubleheaders against Liberty League opponent Vassar College on Wednesday and Thursday.

Sophomore Jeremy Barber was selected as the starting pitcher for the Knights, just his fourth career appearance and first collegiate start. The second-year collegian pitched well and once again showed Clarkson's impressive mound depth as he held the Falcons scoreless through the first three frames. When the fourth inning arrived, a single and an error were followed by a sacrifice bunt, putting runners on second and third with just one out. Back-to-back run-scoring singles gave Fitchburg State a 2-0 lead, but Barber fanned the last hitter he faced to end the inning.

It wasn't until the sixth inning that Clarkson ended its modest scoring drought. Senior Matt Jenack blooped a double between two outfielders and advanced to third on a flyout to right field. Junior Greg Jasek then smacked a single to score Jenack for the first run of the game for the Knights. Unfortunately, that was all that Clarkson would get despite a late threat. Fitchburg scored another run in the eighth, though the Knights nearly made it out of that predicament with a double play as the run came in on a safe call at first base. In the top of the ninth for Clarkson, Will Coleman and Nolan Driscoll each delivered singles and then were both in scoring position after a wild pitch. However, Falcons reliever Javier Lozada wiggled out of the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to end the game and pick up a save.

Barber pitched four innings and allowed six hits while striking out three and Jamie Terry came on to pitch three shutout innings, giving up two hits and recording a strikeout. Will Coleman was 2-for-3 and his older brother John Coleman moved his season-opening hitting streak to six games. For the Falcons, Kyle Cutler gained the win by giving up just a single earned run on six hits in 7.1 innings. Brendan Cutler and Mike St. John each went 2-for-4.
