Knights Open Conference Play with Dominant Pitching Performances

Auburndale, FL - Junior Greg Jasek and freshman Will Coleman of the Clarkson University Baseball team each delivered solid pitching efforts in their second starts of the season as the Golden Knights captured a pair of Liberty League victories over Vassar College on Wednesday, winning 5-1 and 5-2 at the Lake Myrtle Complex.

The Golden Knights improved to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Liberty League while Vassar dropped to 1-3 and 0-2. The two teams will lock up again at 9:30 am at Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL.

Clarkson's staff allowed just three runs in 16 innings on Wednesday, as the team is still dominating off the mound with a 1.48 earned run average, giving up just 12 runs total in eight games. Jasek tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing only a single earned run in seven innings. He gave up seven hits and a walk while striking out seven, but the junior also contributed at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance.

Clarkson scored in the top of the second as Paul Ludden lead off the inning with a double to left-center. Will Coleman singled up the middle to plate Ludden and then Coleman scampered home from third on a sacrifice fly by Matt Jenack. The Knights picked up three more runs in the fourth, started off by a Nolan Driscoll one-out single and a Jenack double. John Coleman quickly sent both runners home with a single to center and Jasek drove in Coleman on a double to center as well, making the score 5-0. The Brewers chipped away with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but that was all Jasek would allow in the contest.

John Coleman went 2-for-3 with three runs produced, driving in two and scoring another, while Jasek was 3-for-4 and Ludden and Driscoll each delivered two hits. For Vassar, Bobby Kinne had three hits in three at bats.

In game two, Will Coleman cruised once again, allowing only four hits and no runs in the first six innings. By that time the Knights were up 5-0 again. In the top of the first, Chris Miller was caught at second base on an attempted steal, but it was enough time for John Coleman to come home from third base. In the third, Jasek produced an RBI-groundout to score Ludden for the second run of the game, and Will Coleman followed with a single up the middle to score Miller. Coleman then circled the bases on a Nolan Driscoll single to center for a 4-0 lead. In the sixth, Paul Ludden scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights their 5-0 edge.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning, Vassar finally broke through offensively with three straight two-out hits. Eric Strickland and Denis Shanagher struck back-to-back triples to score a run with their hits and put some life back into the Brewers. However, in the next frame Coleman quieted the Vassar bats and Ted Wilson came on in the ninth to earn the save, allowing a hit and a walk and adding in a strikeout.

Will Coleman and Driscoll each went 3-for-5 and Ludden went 2-for-4 with two runs. For Vassar, Brad Kendall, Kinne and Shanagher each had two hits. On the mound, Coleman gave up seven hits and two walks and struck out four in eight innings to gain his second victory and Wilson earned the save for his one frame of work.
