Golden Knights Fall to RIT 9-5

Troy, NY - In its second game of the Liberty League tournament, the Clarkson University Baseball team fell to RIT 9-5 on Friday afternoon at Robison Field.

Clarkson is now 24-8 on the season while RIT improves to 23-13.

RIT got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning, but Clarkson answered in the third when sophomore Paul Ludden scored on a double by junior Greg Jasek. RIT would regain the lead with a run in the fourth and then added one more in both the sixth and the seventh to open a 4-1 advantage.

Two more RIT runs in the top of the eighth made it 6-1 in favor of the Tigers and the game appeared to be slipping away from Clarkson. The Golden Knights answered however, with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Clarkson's first three batters reached base to load the bases without an out. After an RIT pitching change, sophomore Chris Miller doubled down the right field line to score senior Matt Jenack and Jasek. Sophomore Dom Pirro followed Miller with a single of his own to bring home Will Coleman and make the score 6-4. That was as close as Clarkson would get as RIT scored three runs in the top of the ninth to make it 9-4. Clarkson scored once in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough and RIT closed the game out.

Sophomore Ted Wilson started the game on the mound and pitched five and two thirds innings, giving up three runs on nine hits. Freshman Andrew Smith pitched the next three innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. Finally, junior Jamie Terry recorded the final out and gave up one hit.

Clarkson will now play RPI at 4:30 today in an elimination game with the winner playing RIT tomorrow and the loser going home.
