CU Women's Basketball Preview - at St. Lawrence (2/17)

Boasting one of the longest winning streaks in the country, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team looks to lock up the top spot in the upcoming Liberty League playoffs when the team takes on St. Lawrence University this Wednesday.

The Golden Knights have rattled off 14 straight wins after a 5-4 start and now sit at 19-4 overall and 12-2 in the Liberty League. With a win over RIT on Saturday, Clarkson earned a sweep of the Tigers and are now in the driver's seat for homecourt throughout the Liberty League tournament. The Knights need just one win in the last two games to take the top spot for the first time since the conference was rebranded in 2004. St. Lawrence is fighting for its playoff life, as the Saints dropped a pair of games this weekend are now tied for fourth in the conference 8-6 with a record of 15-8 overall.

Clarkson dominated the Saints in the first meeting between the two teams, forcing 25 turnovers and shooting 44.6% from the floor, its best rate in conference play this year. St. Lawrence on the otherhand had one of its worst efforts against the Knights, shooting a season-low 30.4% overall and just 1-for-17 from beyond the 3-point arc. Senior Ashley Loggins nearly produced a triple-double against the Saints with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals on January 12th, and is averaging 16.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 4.1 steals per game. She is just seven points shy of tying the school's all-time mark for career points and surpassed the career rebounds mark last weekend. Junior Stephanie Grobe also stood out against St. Lawrence, scoring a career-high 21 points in mid-January, more than double her season-average of 9.7 ppg. Clarkson leads the conference in margin of victory (+9.0 ppg), turnover margin (+7.0 tpg) and steals (13.6 spg).

St. Lawrence's 1-for-17 effort from the 3-point line in the first meeting was a reversal from its success from long distance this year. The Saints lead the Liberty League in 3-pointers made with 151 and are shooting 32.0% from beyond the arc, the second-best figure in the league. Cara Waterson is the only St. Lawrence player averaging double figures, and she is just barely over at 10.2 ppg. Caroline Dalton is close at 9.3 ppg, while Lauren Quattrocchi is averaging 9.1 points, a league-best 6.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per contest.
