CU Women's Hoops Preview - Liberty League Semifinals vs. #4 St. Lawrence (2/24)

Just last Wednesday the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team saw its second-longest winning streak in program history come to an end on a last possesion 3-pointer by St. Lawrence, and this Wednesday the Golden Knights will have the opportunity to exact some revenge when the two teams play in the Liberty League Semifinals at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights earned the top seed in the Liberty League playoffs with an overall record of 20-5 and a conference mark of 13-3 while St. Lawrence gained the fourth spot at 16-9 overall and 9-7 in league games. The two teams will meet for the third time this year at 7:00 pm on Wednesday at Alumni Gymnasium.

In the first meeting between the two teams, Clarkson dominated with a 64-41 victory, its first against St. Lawrence since the 1993-94 season. The Saints committed 25 turnovers in that game and shot just 1-for-17 from beyond the 3-point arc. However, the second game was in complete contrast for St. Lawrence as the team nailed 11 3-pointers in 26 attempts (42.3%) on its home floor.

Clarkson is led by its starting five, which combines for 81% of the team's minutes and 88.8% of the team's points. Senior forward Ashley Loggins is a strong candidate for Liberty League Player of the Year as she ranks second in the league in scoring at 16.9 points per game and second in rebounding at 10.8 boards per contest. She also set a program mark for steals in a season with 105, averaging 4.2 steals per game, a figure that is among the best in the country. In the first meeting of the season, Loggins had 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight steals, but she was held to just six points in the second game, although she did have 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals last Wednesday as well. Sophomore guard Devin Sorell leads the Liberty League in 3-point field goals with 61 and is averaging 15.2 points per game, eighth in the conference. Junior guard Stephanie Grobe had a career-high 21 points against St. Lawrence on January 12th and also chipped in four boards, three steals, two assists and two blocks in the win. She is averaging 9.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Sophomore guard Madison Shea also has posted solid all-around numbers with 8.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.6 steals per game, and junior forward Alyssia Marsal produces 7.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.

St. Lawrence is one of the hardest teams to scout because there is no one player which needs to be stopped. Five players have recorded at least 20 3-pointers this season and no player is averaging double figures, an oddity for a team with 16 wins. Cara Waterson leads the way with 9.5 ppg, while Caroline Dalton is averaging 8.9 points, 6.9 rebounds (10th in the Liberty League), and 1.0 blocks per game. Lauren Quattrocchi leads the unselfish Saints (16.3 assists per game, the league's best) with 6.1 assists per game while also tossing in 8.8 points and 2.1 steals per game. Jenny Scudder and Kaelyn Kohlasch had huge games for the Saints in the second meeting between Clarkson and St. Lawrence. The duo produced just four points on January 12th but combined for 38 points and nine 3-pointers on February 17th. Scudder averages 7.9 points and Kohlasch scores 7.0 points per game.
