8th-Ranked Knights Travel to Minnesota for Two-Game Series vs. 7th-Ranked Gophers

A tough season-opening, non-league slate comes to a close for the Clarkson University Hockey team this weekend as the Golden Knights travel to Minneapolis to take on the University of Minnesota in a two-game series. Game times on Friday and Saturday are 7:00 p.m. central on the big ice (200x100) at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Ranked tied for 8th, and 9th in the national polls, Clarkson, guided by seventh-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, has fared well against some of the top programs in the country to start its 96th season. The Knights post a 4-1-1 record and are coming off a weekend split at Cheel Arena.

The Green and Gold suffered their first loss of the year on Friday with a 3-1 setback to 19th-ranked UMass-Lowell, but came back with a complete effort on Saturday in shutting out 9th-ranked Providence 4-0.

• Two traditional NCAA powerhouses, Clarkson and Minnesota have faced off against each other only four times with the Gophers skating away with the victory in each game. Minnesota rallied for a 4-3 overtime victory at Cheel Arena last year on  October 28 in the programs' first ever regular-season meeting.
• The opening slate to the 2017-18 campaign is one of the toughest in the program's 96-year history with seven of the Knights' first eight games against teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament last March. The only game not against a 2017 NCAA participant was vs. nine-time NCAA champion Michigan, who the Green and Gold shut out 3-0. Clarkson opened the year with a 2-1 win over Penn State. The Knights follwed with a tie (2-2) and win (4-2) at Western Michigan on October 13-14.
• Clarkson matched its best start since the 2006-07 campaign when it also went 3-0-1 to open the season. The Knights finished with a 25-9-5 record and made the NCAA Tournament that season. Clarkson began the 1990-91 campaign unbeaten in its first seven (6-0-1).
• Picked to finish fourth in ECAC Hockey this year by the league coaches, the Knights open conference play next weekend, hosting NY State Capital District rivals Rensselaer and Union at  Cheel Arena.

Kielly was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week for the second time in the opening month of the season. Coming off his second shutout of the season, a 26-save effort in Saturday's 4-0 win over Providence, the sophomore posts a .958 save percentage (2nd in the NCAA) and a 1.32 goals against average (5th). Playing every minute in the Clarkson crease through the first six games, Kielly's owns a .750 winning percentage (T-8th) and is tied for first in shutouts. He also blanked Michigan on October 7 with 29 saves in Potsdam. • Clarkson's top line from last season, sophomores Sheldon Rempal, Devin Brosseau and Nico Sturm have continued the offensive production they displayed as rookie and are the Knights' three leading forwards early in the 2017-18 campaign.
• A right wing, Rempal has tallied at least one point in five of the first six games. He has eight points on three goals and five assists and recorded his second multiple-point game of the year with two assists in Saturday's 4-0 win over Providence.
