Clarkson Drops First Round Game of Cardinal Classic to University of New England

Box Score Plattsburgh, NY – While both the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team and the University of New England struggled mightily in the first half, the Golden Knights could not get out of their offensive funk in the second half and suffered a 67-38 loss to the Nor'easters in the first round of the Cardinal Classic on Friday night.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 1-1 on the season and Clarkson will be relegated to the consolation game of the tournament against host Plattsburgh State at 1:00 pm on Saturday.

Neither the Nor'easters nor Clarkson were particularly adept at making shots in the first half Friday, as both were below 30% from the floor. New England was bolstered by its three 3-point makes, but the Knights were 0-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes and just 2-for-4 from the free throw line. New England also helped itself with 13 offensive rebounds while Clarkson had just three, suffering from a 32-15 disadvantage in the first half all together. New England held a 22-14 edge with 3:25 to go in the second quarter, but the two teams combined to go 0-for-9 from the floor with five turnovers down the stretch and the score remained 22-14 at the break.

New England found a solution for its offensive woes almost immediately out of the intermission, while the Knights continued to struggle. Things got worse when Madison Shea was whistled for an offensive foul at the 5:25 mark of the third quarter, her fourth, and the senior who scored 29 on Wednesday had to take a seat, limiting Clarkson's offensive options further. The Nor'easters took advantage, scoring 12 points over the final three and a half minutes of the quarter to take a 46-22 lead at the end of three periods. New England scored more points (24) in the third quarter than it did in the entire first half, shooting 8-for-16 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

At the start of the fourth, New England tallied five quick points before Hannah Earl made Clarkson's first 3-pointer at the 8:50 mark, but the Knights wouldn't change the scoreboard again until 4:10 when Kati Gotch converted a layup, as New England pulled further away. In the waning moments, Tricia Loso scored nine points in just 57 seconds, making a pair of 3-pointers and then converting on a three-point play with a layup and a free throw.

Loso finished with a team-high nine points in seven minutes, going 3-for-3 from the floor, while Madison Shea added six points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. For New England, Jocelyn Chaput had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Olivia Shaw scored a game-high 14 points and Sam MacDonald also chipped in 12 points for the Nor'easters.
