CU Women's Lacrosse Preview - vs. Union/William Smith (4/21-22)

The Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team will be looking to end a pair of streaks on Friday as the Golden Knights hope to get back into the thick of things for the top four in the Liberty League.

The Golden Knights will take on Union College on Friday and then celebrate Senior Day against William Smith on Saturday afternoon. Clarkson, 9-4 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League, has lost three straight conference games. Union is 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference, but the Golden Knights have never beaten the Dutchwomen in 20 tries, though they came close last year in an 8-7 overtime defeat. William Smith, ranked eighth in the country, is 12-1 overall and 5-0 in league play. Clarkson defeated the Herons for the first time in program history in 2016, 6-4.

Clarkson has lost its last three contests by a total of seven goals after winning its previous two league games by one goal each. The Knights recorded double digits in goals for seven straight games in early March all the way through the first day of April, but the team has come up short in the past four contests. Sophomore Jaid Baytos ranks third in the league in total points (48) and has recorded team-bests in both goals (36) and assists (12) to go along with 16 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. Senior Kate Dillon is second on the team with 40 points on 32 goals and eight assists, adding in 25 groundballs as well. Freshmen Katie Sergeant, Abby Collins and Emma Andrews have combined for 50 goals and 15 assists for 75 points and each has contributed in other places for the Knights, with Sergeant corralling 21 draws and Collins producing 23 groundballs and 17 caused turnovers. Taylor Collins has also contributed 22 points (14 goals, 8 assists) and leads the team in groundballs (38), draws (33) and caused turnovers (22). Amanda Ellman (14), Stephanie Scaia (11) and Cayleen Murphy (11) have also produced double digit turnover marks for the Clarkson defense.

While the Dutchwomen have won only three times in 10 games this year, they have played solid opponents to get to that mark, including three teams currently residing in the top 20 poll. Jackie Hagopian leads the team with 29 points on 25 goals and four assists, while Natalie Sullivan has the best-rounded stat line with 28 points (17 goals, 11 assists), 23 groundballs, 17 caused turnovers, and 11 draw controls. Cailin Pandolfi leads the squad in draws (22) and assists (15), recording 28 points overall. Jen Hughes has a 12.13 goals against average and a .426 save percentage in the Union crease.

Like Union, William Smith has been busy playing ranked foes, and the Herons frequently come away with the win, having lost just once in five games against top-20 teams. Senior Sarah Honan is enjoying an outstanding season in the Herons' crease, ranking third in the nation in goals against average (4.60) and eighth in save percentage (.565) while also producing a team-best 32 groundballs and causing 14 turnovers. Laura Rollins leads the team in caused turnovers with 19 and she has also scooped up 31 groundballs. Alexandra Bird is the Herons' top scorer with 38 points on 29 goals and nine assists, while Melissa Moore has been busy in all aspects of the game with 33 points (21 goals, 12 assists), 25 groundballs, 18 caused turnovers and 24 draws. Allie Flaherty (28 points), Ali Burns (28 points), and Bizzer Gahagan (22 points, 37 draw controls) have also contributed heavily to the William Smith offense.
