Clarkson Faces Northeastern in Weekend Series in Boston

A tough challenge awaits the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as it officially opens the 2017-18 campaign with a weekend series at 8th-ranked Northeastern University in Boston, MA. The Golden Knights, guided by 10th-year Head Coach Matt Desrosiers and assistants Britni Smith and Tony Maci, will face off against the Huskies on Friday in a 7:00 p.m. game at Matthews Arena and then will battle the Hockey East foe again on Saturday, beginning at 3:00 p.m.

  • Clarkson went 13-3-2 against ranked opponents last season.
  • Defending NCAA Champion and ranked number one in both national polls, the Golden Knights return 16 letterwinners from last year's team that skated to a 32-4-5 overall record and won the program's second national title in four years. The Knights, who claimed the program's third ECAC Hockey Regular Season Championship last year, with a 19-1-2 league mark, are picked to win the conference again this season by the preseason coaches' poll.
  • The Golden Knights are 9-4-1 in their first 14 season openers.
  • Clarkson and Northeastern are tied 3-3 in their all-time series, but have not faced off against each other since January 4, 2013 when the Huskies won their second straight in the series with a 4-3 victory at Cheel Arena.
  • Senior defenseman Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, IL), will serve as the Green and Gold's captain for the second consecutive year. Coming off an All-American year on the Clarkson blueline, Harmon is a preseason Top-10 Favorite for the 2018 Patty Kazmaier Award.
  • The Knights will open the 16-game regular-season home slate on October 6-7 when they host their first ever meetings against Bemidji State.
  • Clarkson will hold its second NCAA National Championship Banner Day ceremony in four years when the Green and Gold raise the 2017 Banner to go alongside the 2014 Banner on Saturday, September 21 prior to the 3:00 p.m. game against St. Lawrence.
  • Clarkson got a preseason jump to its 15th campaign with a 5-3 victory over Guelph University in exhibition action at Cheel Arena last Saturday.

  • The Knights dominated the Gryphons, outshooting the visitors 51-11. Freshman Tia Stoddard (La Mesa, CA) scored her first two goals in a Clarkson jersey (but won't count in NCAA statistics) to pace the offense. Harmon tallied three assists. Junior Loran Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) tallied one goal and one assist, while senior Katelyn Fournier (Ottawa, ONT) and junior Cassidy Vinkle (Belleville, ONT) both scored once. 
  • The Knights used all three goaltenders with freshman Kia Castonguay (Ipswich, MA) picking up the win by turning aside all four shots she faced in the second period. Senior Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) started in goal and made two first-period stops. Sophomore Jenna Brenneman (Eagan, MN) posted two saves in the final stanza.
