Knights Fall Short Versus Potsdam, 2-1

Potsdam, NY – Despite a couple of chances in the final three minutes of the contest, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team was unable to come up with the tying goal against Potsdam State and suffered its first loss of the season, 2-1, against the Bears on Tuesday evening at Maxcy Turf Field.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 1-1-1 through three games, while Potsdam State improved to 3-0 on the young season. Clarkson will be back at home on Friday afternoon when it takes on Cortland State.

The Green and Gold took little time getting on the scoreboard on Tuesday night, tallying just 80 seconds into the contest, but it would be their only goal of the night. Camryn Careccia centered a pass to Summer Gillespie near the top of the box and the senior outmuscled the Potsdam defender to get a good look at the Bears goal. Her shot went high and caromed off the crossbar, but junior Giulia Mahoney was able to head the rebound into an empty net at 1:20 for a 1-0 Clarkson advantage.

Potsdam enjoyed a few opportunities over the next 15 minutes, but one shot went wide, Clarkson goalkeeper Elyse Green made a point-blank save, and another shot went over top the crossbar to keep the Knights up 1-0 through 20 minutes. Clarkson almost added another goal midway through the half when Alicia Bushey ripped a shot off a corner kick, but her attempt went high at 20:10.

Late in the first half, the Bears tied things up when Mackenzie Bowie outmaneuvered the defenders at the top of the box, doing a quick turn and taking a hard shot with her left foot into the upper corner at 33:29.

The best scoring opportunities came in the first half, but Potsdam took advantage of a turnover early in the second half to score what proved to be the game-winning goal. Midway between the centerline and the top of the penalty area, Clarkson lost control of the ball on an attempted clear, allowing Rylie Murray to gain possession in the midfield. She then found Brooke Falsion alone at the top of the box, and Falsion took just a few steps with the ball before shooting a grounder past Green at 52:25.

Both teams had a few chances in the second half, but the opportunities were either squelched by the defenses or the shots were too far wide to be of concern. Clarkson had a shot from Ashley Abel go high with just under three minutes to go and another shot from Mahoney was blocked, allowing the Bears to ride out the rest of the contest.

Potsdam finished with a modest 18-15 edge in shots while Clarkson had a 5-3 edge in corner kick chances. Green finished with seven saves for Clarkson and Delphine Leonard stopped three shots for Potsdam.
