Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Clarkson Claims Windjammer Classic Title

Timely scoring, a very strong defensive effort through two and a half periods and a key save lifted the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to its second Windjammer Classic championship with a 3-1 win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Vermont.

Ranked 6/7th in the national polls, the Golden Knights improve to 12-2-4 overall. Clarkson returns to ECAC Hockey play next weekend at Cheel Arena, hosting Rensselaer and Union in the its final games of 2019.

Three different Knights scored goals –Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE), Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, MAN) and Kristy Pidgeon (Ingleside, ONT) - and Marie-Pier Coulombe (Carignan, QUE) posted 16-saves, including eight third-period stops as the Green and Gold concluded non-league play with a 9-1-2 record outside of conference.

As was the case yesterday, Clarkson scored first.  Again, it was Giguere who tallied the goal.  Friesen tapped a loose puck at center into an open spot for Giguere to skate into.  The junior right wing skated hard up the right side and was able to generate enough room to get a shot off from the circle.  The puck squeezed through the Penn State goalie and into the back of the net for a 1-0 Green and Gold advantage at 4:52.  The goal was Giguere's third of the weekend and 18th of the campaign, and extended her point streak to 13 consecutive games.

Neither team scored the rest of the way in spite of a couple of good chances, and Clarkson led 1-0 after 20:00.

The new line of Friesen, Giguere and freshman left wing Brooke McQuigge (Bowmanville, ONT) was at it again in the second period.  This time is was the senior center Friesen who scored.

Freshman defenseman Lauren Bernard (Madison, OH), who assisted on the firat goal, was able to glove down a clearing attempt at the left point.  She then guided a pass to McQuigge who tapped the puck to Friesen in the left circle.  Friesen let go a turn-around shot that surprised Nittany Lion goaltender Chantal Burke and the Green and Gold earned a 2-0 lead.

Clarkson outshot Penn State 10-4 in the middle frame and took a two-goal advantage to the locker room after 40:00 of action.

Penn State would not go quietly, however.

After generating several good scoring chances in the middle portion of the third period, the Nittany Lions finally broke through when defenseman Mallory Ulhlein sent a left point shot through traffic and past Coulumbe at 12:43 to make the score 2-1.

Just a few shifts later, Coulombe robbed Abby Welch to keep Clarkson in the lead.

Pidgeon completed the scoring with the goalie pulled for Penn State at 19:52 making the final score 3-1.
