Knights Fall at Skidmore, 61-43

Saratoga Springs, NY – A stretch of nearly 12 minutes without a field goal put the Clarkson University Women's Basketball behind by double digits in the second half as the Golden Knights dropped a 61-43 decision to Skidmore College on Friday night.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-17 overall and 4-13 in the Liberty League, while the Thoroughbreds edged up to 8-16 and 7-10. Clarkson closes out the regular season tomorrow afternoon against Rensselaer.

The Green and Gold went 0-for-9 with eight turnovers in the third quarter, scoring only five points in the period after intermission. Clarkson went without a field goal for a stretch of 11 minutes, 46 seconds from the end of the second quarter to the start of the fourth.

Skidmore started the game by doubling up the Knights 10-5 in the first six minutes, thanks to six points from Jessica Centore. However, Molly Stewart tossed in a layup at 1:24 and then hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the first to get the Knights to within two. At the start of the second, Clarkson gained the lead on a Carly Assimon 3-pointer and extended it to six points with a layup from Kati Gotch and another 3-pointer from Rachel Marion. Up 21-15 at the 5:38 mark following Marion's 3-pointer, Skidmore scored seven straight to take the lead with just under two minutes to go. Emma Buonanno hit a jumper at the 1:33 mark to put the Knights back up by one, but Skidmore scored the final six points of the period, including a last-second 3-pointer from Mary Kate Palleschi.

That jumper by Buonanno near the end of the second turned out to be a brief break in the Clarkson scoring slump, as the make was the only one that the Knights would get in a stretch of nearly 16 minutes. Meanwhile, Skidmore took advantage, rolling off a 12-0 run late in the quarter to take a 17-point lead (44-27). The Knights got back within 12 in the fourth briefly, but Skidmore extended its advantage to as many as 20 in the final period before the margin finally settled at an 18-point gap.

Clarkson shot 27.3% (15-for-55) in the game while the Thoroughbreds went 25-for-61 from the floor (41.0%). Molly Stewart scored 13 points and added in 10 rebounds for the Knights while Buonanno scored 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting. For Skidmore, Centore scored 13 points and added in seven boards, four assists and three steals. Kate McCarney scored 13 points in just 23 minutes off the bench, shooting 5-for-8 from the field.
