Kousmanidis Puts Knights On Top with Overtime Goal at Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Tonia Kousmanidis scored less than a minute into the first overtime as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team picked up a 1-0 win against crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam Tuesday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-8-2 on the season while the Bears fell to 6-10-1. Clarkson closes out the regular season against Rensselaer on Saturday, needing some help along with a victory for a shot at the Liberty League postseason.

Potsdam began the overtime with possession and attempted to put Clarkson on its heels with a deep kick into the Golden Knights' defensive end, but the Green and Gold quickly countered and ended up with a throw-in down in the Bears' defensive zone. Chloe Hodge found Juliette LaRock to restart the Clarkson offense off the throw-in, and LaRock then allowed Hodge to find some space with a pass down the right side. Hodge carried the ball forward to the outskirts of the penalty area and delivered a perfect cross, finding Kousmanidis in front where the sophomore closed out the play with a hard shot to the top of the goal at 90:38, her second score of the season.

Although Potsdam produced the first shot of the game less than four minutes into the contest, it was the Golden Knights who would dominate the opening 45 minutes and most of Tuesday's contest. Much of the play was in the Potsdam defensive end as Clarkson recorded six shots as well as three corner kicks while keeping the Bears otherwise silent on offense. However, just two of the shots in the opening half were on target.

Clarkson continued to hold much of the possession at the start of the second half, and this time the shots were more often on target. The best chance may have come on a hard left-footed liner from Hannah Letourneau that required a sprawling save from Potsdam's goalkeeper Chloe Gordon in the 58th minute. Potsdam finally picked up a second shot midway through the half, and the attempt was a decent one as it went just wide at 65:49.

The Golden Knights had another solid opportunity with less than 20 minutes to play when a Clarkson player was taken down just outside the penalty area, but the ensuing direct kick by Sarah Kohls went high and wide at 71:11. The best chances of the game for Clarkson came in the final few moments, though, as Kousmanidis hit the crossbar with a shot late in the 87th minute, and with just a few ticks left on the clock Emily Davis's shot from less than 15 yards out was picked by Gordon to maintain the shutout and send the game to overtime.

Clarkson finished with an 18-5 edge in shots and a 6-2 lead in shots on goal, as well as a 6-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Elise Almgren made two stops in her first career start (and second career appearance) for the Knights while Chloe Gordon made five saves for Potsdam.
