Second-Half Scores Give Knights a 2-0 Win to Open 2022

Potsdam, NY – Second-half goals from Angelina Fahrenkrug and Lillian Gillett helped lift the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to a season-opening 2-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights (1-0) will close out the first weekend when they host Colby-Sawyer at 12:00 noon on Sunday afternoon. SUNY Potsdam fell to 1-1 on the year.

Clarkson controlled play for much of the first half, but couldn't break through in the early going. SUNY Potsdam switched the momentum a bit in the latter portion of the second half, challenging Clarkson's defense, but failing to muster much in the way of opportunities as the team struggled to get past the Knights' defense to challenge Clarkson goalkeeper Molly DiCaprio.

Potsdam again held play for the first few moments of the second half, but Clarkson upped its pace offensively and in the midfield and rarely allowed Potsdam to break out on its offensive side of the field. That constant pressure put on the Bears' defense finally broke through midway in the second half. Sarah Kohls picked up control in the midfield and chipped the ball forward to Angelina Fahrenkrug, who outmaneuvered Potsdam goalkeeper Savannah Bowie and tapped a shot into the left corner at 66:36.

The Knights maintained their offensive push throughout the second half and kept Potsdam from getting much of a foothold. Clarkson ended up getting an insurance goal in the waning moments. Chloe Hodge sent a cross through the box and found Lillian Gillett on the opposite side. The freshman had plenty of time to settle the pass and was able to kick the ball past Bowie into the left corner for her first collegiate goal at 86:47.

Clarkson finished with a 16-2 edge in shots, though the margin was a little lighter in terms of shots on goal at 7-1. The Knights also had an advantage in corner kick chances at 9-1, though many of those came in clusters. Molly DiCaprio was called upon to make one save in the shutout, while Savannah Bowie denied five shots for the Bears.
