Two Second-Half Goals from Emily Davis Lifts Clarkson Past Union, 2-1

Schenectady, NY - The game-tying goal in the 73rd minute and then the game-winner in the 89th minute were both scored by junior midfielder Emily Davis, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team clinched a playoff spot and home game in the Liberty League postseason thanks to a 2-1 victory over Union College on Saturday afternoon.

The win improved Clarkson's overall record to 11-4-2 and pushed the Golden Knights to 5-4-0 in conference games, good enough for the fourth seed in the Liberty League playoffs, where the Green and Gold will host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Tuesday. Clarkson's 11th victory of the season tied the school mark for wins in a season (1992), while the Golden Knights' winning percentage of .706 is the best in program history.

The Golden Knights dominated possession in the first half and had a 12-3 lead in shots, but only two of those attempts made it on frame and neither scooted past Union goalkeeper Rachel Berliner. It appeared as if the Knights might fall on a lucky break for the Garnet Chargers as what looked like a harmless pass from the midfield created a breakaway with the Clarkson defense far away from the goal. Katie Kilmeade tapped a pass through traffic and past the Clarkson defense where Sam Friedman was going 1-on-3, but had a step on the defenders. After a touch to settle, Friedman was able to hit a sharp grounder beyond the reach of Clarkson keeper Molly DiCaprio, who ran out to cut down the angle. Friedman's goal was scored at 70:07.

Union had little time to celebrate as the home team was quickly back on its heels defending Clarkson on a corner kick just a few moments later. Julia Tylar sent a cross into the box, and while the ball momentarily seemed to be getting cleared, Emily Davis won a scrum in front and found the back of the net at 72:51.

All Clarkson needed was a tie to ensure entry to the postseason, but the Knights came away with a victory. With just a few minutes to go, Clarkson again had its offense started by a corner kick off the foot of Tylar. This one was sent out to the midfield, but the Knights regained possession. Chloe Hodge brought the ball back into the danger area, but was taken off the play with a tackle near the top of the box. However, the ball trickled over to Davis, who was there to send a strong shot with her left foot into the top corner for a goal at 88:08.

Clarkson finished with a 27-6 edge in shots, though that advantage was muted somewhat in shots on goal (8-4). The Knights took advantage with goals that eventually came off two of their 11 corner kicks. DiCaprio made three saves in the win for Clarkson, while Berliner made six stops.
