Four-Goal Outburst in Season-Opener Lifts Golden Knights Past SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Callie Abel scored twice, the first and fourth goals of the game, as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team opened 2024 with a 4-0 win over SUNY Potsdam Friday night at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights will get a day's rest before returning to the pitch when the team takes on University of Rochester at 11:00 am on Sunday, again at Hantz.

Much like last year's contest, Clarkson applied pressure to the Potsdam defense from the start, though the Bears did possess the ball and challenge the Knights' defense at times in the early going. The Green and Gold had a few solid chances in the early going but Potsdam's Megan Fry was up to the task with some solid saves.

That pressure in the Potsdam defensive end resulted in a goal late in the first half. Clarkson had already taken a few lengthy direct kicks and corners in an attempt to break the early tie, but it wasn't until Julia Tylar's corner kick cross found the head of Callie Abel near the center of the penalty area, and Abel's shot went to the top left at 32:05. Just a few minutes later, Clarkson picked up what proved to be an insurance goal. Chloe Hodge dodged a couple of defenders near the top of the 18, and just as another was converging, Hodge skipped a pass square to Emily Davis, who blasted a shot with her right foot into the corner of the net to put the tally at 2-0 at the 34:30 mark.

Clarkson picked up two more additional goals in the second, one about 10 minutes in and another near the midway point of the period. Emily Davis used her left foot from outside the 18 to send a pass into the penalty area, where Maddie Lopol got just enough of a touch to redirect the ball to Emma Robinson, and the sophomore would not miss from in close, burying a shot into the top of the net at 55:50. Just under 20 minutes later, newcomer Brooke Butler earned her first collegiate point by locating Callie Abel at the other side of the box. After one quick move to elude a defender, Abel fired a shot past Fry, making it 4-0 at 74:31.

The Knights finished with a 25-2 edge in shots, and a 13-1 lead in shots on goal, while the corner kick advantage also went to Clarkson at 10-2. Molly DiCaprio was called upon to make one save, earning her the 17th shutout of her collegiate career, setting a new school mark. Fry made nine saves in the defeat for the Bears.
