Knights Upended In Overtime Versus Brown, 3-2

Potsdam, NY – For the second straight day, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team came up a goal short at home, falling to Brown University 3-2 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights fell to 18-7-1 overall and 9-5-0 in ECAC Hockey, while Brown edged forward to 11-9-1 and 6-7-1 with their second win of the weekend. Clarkson plays its weekend conference series against St. Lawrence next weekend, hosting the Saints on Friday and heading to Canton for a game on Saturday.

Just like the first time the two teams met, there was no scoring in the first period, though the Knights nearly tripled up Brown in shots on goal (14-5). The second period was nearly even in that regard, as the Bears had one more than Clarkson, but each team lit the lamp once. Brown had a power play chance that overlapped the first and second period and the Bears found the back of the net shortly after the opportunity ended. The Bears had the puck deep in the Clarkson defensive zone, but had trouble finding possession below the right circle in the corner. Eventually the puck leaked out to Olivia Fantino where she was able to tip in the centering pass at 1:55. Clarkson responded roughly five minutes later with its first score of the contest. A long possession for the Knights was kept in the Brown defensive zone behind the net and on the left side boards. The puck slipped back to Nicole Gosling and she went to the opposite point for her defensive linemate, Haley Winn. The senior defender took a couple strides in and ripped a wrist shot from the top of the right circle to knot the game up at 1-1 at the 6:42 mark.

Clarkson gained its first lead of the weekend just a couple of minutes into the third period when the Knights were skating on the power play. Longtime teammates Anne Cherkowski, Nicole Gosling, and Haley Winn maintained some extended possession near the blue line. Winn took a shot that was denied and then corralled by Cherkowski near the goal line. Some continued cycling and passing eventually gave Cherkowski a shot near the top of the slot as she picked her spot by utilizing a screen from Rhea Hicks, beating Rory Edwards at 3:16 to go up 2-1.

Brown responded quickly, tallying a goal less than a minute later. The Bears used a very fast transition from their own defensive end with two long passes, the second a stretch pass that found Margot Norehad for a wide open wrist shot at the top of the right circle at 4:12.

Down the stretch in regulation, Clarkson had plenty of opportunities, but Rory Edwards stood tall on numerous occasions, robbing Gosling with a solid glove save at 6:39 and then setting aside several other shots as Clarkson tilted the ice against the Bears. However, it was Brown that would end up gaining the win with a score on its first shot of the overtime session.

Brown won the opening draw during the 3-on-3 session and never lost possession, taking the puck in and keeping the zone. Cameron Sikich flipped a backhand shot at net and it bounced off Julia Minotti and in at the 0:34 mark in overtime for the win.

Clarkson finished with a 34-22 lead in shots on goal. The Knights were 1-for-2 on the power play and Brown was scoreless on five tries with an extra skater. Rory Edwards had 32 saves for Brown and Julia Minotti denied 19 shots.
