Knights Bested By Thoroughbreds in Mid-Week Clash

Potsdam, N.Y. - One goal in the first half followed by two in the second downed the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team as Skidmore College earned a 3-0 victory, Tuesday evening.

The Knights move to 6-4-3 overall, 3-3-1 in conference play. The team returns to action Saturday, travelling downstate to take on Ithaca College in one of two remaining Liberty League regular season contests in 2025.

Skidmore would break the deadlock in the 29th minute. A long ball forward out of the back from Jed Dougherty was chased down on the edge of the Clarkson penalty area by Connor Mansfield. The pass was initially shielded by a Golden Knight defender as it looked to be headed back into the 18 yard box but an uncharacteristic miscommunication allowed Mansfield to poke the ball away from pressure, setting up a wide open net for 1-0.

Mansfield came close to getting a second in the 40th minute as he chased down another ball over the top on the right wing. The attacker connected on a right footed rocket just outside of the six yard area, sending a  dangerous attempt towards the net that was met by Carter Kladstrup, who parried the ball out of danger.

Following strong play between both sides in the midfield to open the second half, the visitors would add two more in a five-minute stretch in the 74th and 79th minutes. In the 74th, Tobias Catizone was on the receiving end of a cross-field ball that switched play to the right wing. The attacker took several touches to the middle of the pitch before sending a left-footed strike from just outside the 18. The shot split through two Clarkson defenders and into the back of the net to double the Thoroughbred lead.

Ethan Benjamin would add his name to the scoresheet with the third Skidmore goal of the game. A corner floated in from the left was initially met in the air by Kladstrup before dropping right in front of an open goal. Benjamin emerged from the ensuing scrum with the ball, powering it over the goal line to make it 3-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Struggling to gain a true foothold in the attacking third through much of the contest, the best chance for the Knights came in the 89th minute when Thomas Huguenin led a break out of midfield on the left wing. The junior slid a pass across the edge of the 18 yard box to the feet of Ryan Brazell on the right side who met it with a first-time attempt that sailed wide right of the goal.

Skidmore led the way in shots (9-4) and shots on goal (7-0). Kladstrup was credited with four saves in the effort for Clarkson while Will Devall did not make a stop for the visitors. Daniel Medina (2) and Noah Partenza (1) accounted for the rest of the Clarkson shot attempts.
