Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Soderwall Strong with 27 Stops in Knights 1-0 Loss to #8 North Dakota

Potsdam, NY – Shane Soderwall made 27 stops and allowed only a single goal against eighth-ranked North Dakota, but the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team came up empty in game two of its series against the Fighting Hawks, as the visitors won the second game of the series 1-0 over the Green and Gold on Saturday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights fell back to 2-4-0 on the season while North Dakota improved to 4-2 on the young campaign. Clarkson will remain in the friendly confines of Cheel Arena next weekend when the team hosts a pair of teams from the Midwest in Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State.

Compared to the previous day's output on the power play, scoring opportunities were light throughout the contest. Though North Dakota had 20 total shots in the first period, only six made their way to the cage as Clarkson was busy getting in front of the shots, accumulating eight blocks in the first period. The Fighting Hawks ended the period on the power play due to a whistle for tripping on Talon Sigurdson, but Clarkson's penalty kill was up to the task.

At the start of the second, just as Sigurdson was leaving the penalty box, Clarkson was called for another infraction just 13 seconds in. That put the Fighting Hawks back on the power play and this time North Dakota would convert. The strong skating of Jake Livanavage kept the puck in the zone along the right circle and carried the puck into the high slot. Livanavage spotted his teammate between the left edge of the right circle and the dot for a one-timer and Keaton Verhoeff finished with a shot just past Clarkson goaltender Shane Soderwall at 1:34.

Clarkson nearly tied the game a few moments later on two shots off a breakout. The first attempted was turned aside by Jan Spunar, but Jamie Mangan was there for a rebound attempt, only to be denied by Spunar again when he hugged the post to cut down any shooting lanes. With a little over six minutes to go, Mangan again had a chance at the bottom of the left circle only to see Bennett Zmolek come flying through the crease to get in front where he and Spunar were able to smother the puck and end the threat. Two minutes later, Soderwall made another outstanding save with his pad to keep the score 1-0.

Soderwall continued to stand tall in the third period, with his best save occurring while the Knights were on the penalty kill. A nice cross ice pass from Mac Swanson located Will Zellers, but he was unable to keep his skates for a strong shot, allowing Soderwall to slide across the crease and deny Zellers' attempt.

Soderwall left the net in the waning minutes of the contest with hopes of scoring the equalizer, but instead it turned out that one of the better defensive plays came about with the empty crease. A 2-2 saw Clarkson defenders on the left side and slightly trailing, but both Ty Brassington and Tate Taylor were able to make headlong dives and use their sticks to knock the puck away with roughly a minute to go. A late penalty ended any hope of Clarkson making a comeback as Soderwall had to spend the last 25 seconds with the team on the penalty kill.

North Dakota ended the contest with a 64-37 edge in total shots, though the margin was reduced to 28-17 in shots on goal thanks to 15 blocked shots by the Golden Knights, including six by Tate Taylor. The Hawks were 1-for-6 on the power play and Clarkson was 0-for-4 in its chances. Soderwall had 27 saves and Jan Spunar stopped 17 shots for the shutout.
