Canton, N.Y. - The hosts would score two goals 15 minutes apart in the second half as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to local rivals St. Lawrence, Tuesday evening.
The Knights move to 2-6-3 overall, 0-4-1 in Liberty League play. The team hosts Bard College this upcoming Saturday at Hantz field, on the hunt to pick up their first league win of 2025.
St. Lawrence had the first real chance of the game 15 minutes in when a ball played cross field from the left wing fell right to Kaitlyn Barton who had made a run, cutting in front of the Clarkson defender. The attacker fielded the pass near the edge of the 18 on the right wing and took several touches before goal, setting up a 1v1 with Kenzie Roth in goal. Roth stood strong however, closing in on Barton and making the save outside of her goal to prevent the scoring opportunity. The Saints came close again in the 21st minute as Meredith Donahue controlled a pass with her back to goal a little over 20 yards out before turning and sending a shot that crept just over the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
Clarkson managed three shooting opportunities off the feet of Brooke Everest and Lillian Gillett over the course of the opening half but were ultimately forced to settle for long range attempts with none of the shots testing the keeper on target.
Roth was called into action again as the second half commenced as a cross played by a Saints attacker was deflected by a Clarkson defender in front of goal and headed dangerously towards the top right corner before the junior was able to get her hand on it and palm it out of danger. Determined to break the deadlock, St. Lawrence would have another chance in the 51st minute when Barton was sent through on another breakaway down the left wing. Receiving the ball near half field, the attacker made her way into the left side of the 18 before again being met by an outrushing Roth who managed to do just enough to push the ball wide and away from the goal, allowing the Golden Knight defense to reset.
Clarkson would get their first attempt on goal in the 55th minute as Everest picked up a loose ball 22 yards out and connected on a right-footed shot that was deflected by a defender, taking the venom out of the shot that was collected by Zoe Davenport on a bounce.
Following continued sustained pressure, St. Lawrence would find the first goal of the game in the 61st minute courtesy off another break on the left wing where Donahue made no mistake in the box, sending a right footed shot past Roth for 1-0.
The Knights would get another decent chance off a free-kick in their attacking third as Julia Tylar connected on a shot from about 30 yards out that took two sharp hops off the wet grass before being collected by Davenport again to eliminate the chance.
St. Lawrence added a second in the 76th following a free kick of their own on the left wing that was floated in by Chloe Bourque towards the back post where it was forced across the line by Barrett Freeman in a crowd of players to double the Saints advantage and give them the rivalry victory.
Roth would be credited with five saves for the Knights, Davenport with three for the Saints. St. Lawrence led in shots (12-7) and shots on goal (7-3), limiting chances for the Knights to long-range looks. Clarkson again relied heavily on their starters as has been a theme so far, with 9 of the 10 outfield players going the full 90 minutes on the afternoon.
