Hangliter Produces 14 Aces in Clarkson Split Against Skidmore and Oswego State

Saratoga Springs, NY – Splitting in its final regular-season weekend of the season, the Clarkson University Volleyball team had to settle for a road playoff game as the Golden Knights fell in four sets to Skidmore College (25-17, 25-17, 12-25, 25-21) and later picked up a non-conference win over Oswego State (25-20, 25-17, 25-21).

The Golden Knights moved to 12-13 on the season and 3-5 in Liberty League matches, qualifying for the playoffs where they will head to William Smith College for a match on Tuesday, November 11th. Clarkson does have one more match before that tilt, playing SUNY Potsdam this Thursday, November 6th.

In the opening set against the Thoroughbreds, the two teams were close for much of the game until the midway point, as Clarkson trailed by just two on a number of occasions. It was not until late in the set when Maya Stolarz delivered a kill, a solo block, and another kill to provide Skidmore with some breathing room. The Thoroughbreds would never relinquish the advantage and pushed that momentum into the next set when they started off with eight straight points, including three aces by Chloe Heitman. It took some time for Clarkson to get back within striking distance, and even then the Knights never drew closer than five points.

Clarkson dominated the third set from start to finish, scoring five of the first six points and extending the margin to as many as 14 (18-4) due in large part to a number of unforced errors by Skidmore. Unfortunately for the Knights, after a double-digit win in the third, the team was unable to carry the momentum into the fourth. Skidmore began with a 5-1 lead and then a 9-2 advantage, but Clarkson rallied to get back within one thanks to three aces from Marin Hangliter. Clarkson tied the set at 11-11, but again fell behind by five, only to see Hangliter add three more aces to draw the Knights to within one (19-18). Clarkson tied the set again at 21-21; however, Skidmore never allowed the Green and Gold to take the lead in the set, closing things out with a kill by Stolarz.

In the first match against Skidmore, Conley Burns registered 16 kills and 13 digs, hitting .323 to headline Clarkson's offense. Marin Hangliter had seven kills, but was more impressive from the service line where she delivered nine aces. Jordyn Leader also delivered on offense with a .579 hitting percentage and 12 kills, while Ashley Currier added 26 assists and Olivia Baxter notched 13 digs.

Versus Oswego State, Clarkson came out with the first six points of the match, capped by an ace from Conley Burns. Though the Lakers would draw back to within two (14-12), the Knights never relinquished the lead and held at least a three-point advantage for the rest of the opening set. Clarkson started off similarly strong in set number-two, including three straight aces from Hangliter that made the score 9-3. The second set was never particularly close, as the Knights extended the margin throughout, including a double-digit lead (23-12) following yet another ace by Hangliter.

The third set was a different story entirely as the two teams tussled back and forth for most of the game. Clarkson scored the first two, only to see Oswego State rally with seven straight, giving the Lakers their first lead of the match. Clarkson responded with a long run of its own, rattling off eight straight, including two aces from Izzie Piano. The Lakers nearly matched that run with a 5-0 stretch, but then the two teams went back and forth for a bit, making it appear as if the match could go to another set. Down by one, Clarkson picked up three straight kills, including two by Ashley Currier, and the Knights never trailed again, closing things out on a combined block from Hangliter and Leader.

In the match against Oswego State, Hangliter continued to excel on serves with five more aces to go along with her 11 kills and 12 digs. Conley Burns added another double-double on 10 kills and 10 digs. Ashley Currier, hitting exclusively instead of her normal setting duties, added eight kills. Natasha Aguirre ran the offense with 36 assists and Olivia Baxter added 14 digs and four aces. Jordyn Leader also produced five blocks and five kills.
