Soderwall Strong Again with 39 Saves, Clarkson Downs Union 5-1

Schenectady, NY – Shane Soderwall was difficult to solve for the final 58 minutes of the contest as the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team picked up a 5-1 win over Union College on Friday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in ECAC Hockey, while Union fell to 5-2-1 and 1-2 in league play. Clarkson takes on Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.

Soderwall recorded 39 saves, a season-high, in the win for Clarkson as the Knights recovered from a slow start to earn the win.

Union came out strong in the first half of the opening period, registering eight shots on goal before Clarkson put one on the Garnet Chargers' cage. Among those first shots was a goal, putting the home team up early on. A pass through the slot missed its intended target and went all the way to the boards. A fortuitous bounce came to the stick of Ben Muthersbaugh and he took a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Shane Soderwall at 2:11.

After Clarkson killed off a penalty, the Knights began skating with additional energy and it resulted in a pair of goals just a few minutes apart. The Green and Gold tied the game at 13:05 in the first period shortly after a faceoff from the left circle. Following Clarkson's win on the draw, one quick pass went back to Ty Brassington who then skated down towards the end line. Just between the bottom of the left circle and the extended line, Brassington found enough daylight underneath the pad of Union goalie Cameron Korpi, going five-hole to tie the game 1-1.

Two minutes later, a pass from the right circle back into the slot bounced around off skates and players, finally finding the stick of Talon Sigurdson, who backhanded a shot in at 15:06, with assists going to Ryan Bottrill and Owen Van Steensel, giving Clarkson a 2-1 advantage.

Two penalties at the end of the first period saw the teams open the second with a 4-on-4, but that quickly turned into a 5-on-3 when Union's penalty expired and Clarkson picked up another. Down two players for 50 seconds, Clarkson fended off the Garnet Chargers thanks to three saves by Soderwall. During the next 70 seconds of 5-on-4, Union had a couple of chances, but Soderwall again smothered one in his bread basket and then picked up another off the glove shortly after the penalty ended.

Clarkson took advantage of the momentum shift, scoring twice in a stretch of just a few minutes. The first came in transition as the trio of freshmen from Quebec combined for a goal. Justin Cote had the puck just inside the Union defensive zone, but he backhanded a pass to Mael St-Denis in the slot, and one more quick pass to the opposite side of the crease gave Remi Gelinas a chance which he would not miss, making it 3-1 at 4:35.

Shortly after the third Clarkson goal, the Knights were whistled for a penalty, but again Union's power play was denied. The Knights were given a chance with an extra skater when Shawn O'Donnell was hit in the head with a stick from behind on a short-handed attempt, sending Ben Muthersbaugh out of the game with a five-minute major and a game misconduct. After skating 4-on-4 for a minute, the Knights scored about 35 seconds into its major power play. A backhanded pass by Jared Mangan through the slot was redirected right back to him, and he tipped the puck in at 7:36 to make it 4-1.

Although Clarkson would not score again on its extended power play, Union had some chances near the end of its penalty kill. Soderwall denied two grade-A chances 1-on-1 against the Garnet Chargers as well as another save in close near the end of the major.

Clarkson spent much of the third period playing defensively to keep Union from getting back to within striking distance. After being unable to solve Soderwall, the Garnet Chargers tried to get back into the contest by pulling their goalie for an extra attacker. The Knights wisely took a timeout to give their skaters a break, and shortly after that breather, Clarkson picked up another a goal on the vacated net. Talon Sigurdson picked up his second goal of the contest with 2:36 remaining.

Soderwall put an exclamation point on his performance in the final two minutes when Union was awarded a penalty shot after a Clarkson defensive cover up in the crease. Carter Korpi skated in on the left side but it shot was flicked aside with a blocker on Soderwall's stick side.
