Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Close Out 2025 with 3-2 Win Over RIT

Potsdam, NY – Ryan Bottrill scored twice in the second period and Talon Sigurdson picked up an early third period score to lift the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team to a 3-2 non-league win over RIT on Monday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-11-0 overall, their fourth win in the last five contests, while RIT fell to 10-8-0, as Clarkson exacted some revenge from an early-season 6-2 loss to the Tigers in mid-October. Clarkson has one more non-league game remaining on the schedule as the squad travels to face Niagara this weekend.

Clarkson had the better chances in the early going as the Knights skated hard to create opportunities. The best of those chances came on a backhand from Ty Brassington from the right circle at the 10:00 mark, as Clarkson controlled the ice for much of the frame.

Despite those chances by the Knights, the game's first goal came on an unconventional give-and-go by the Tigers. RIT worked the puck behind the Clarkson net for about 20 seconds with Evan Konyen gaining possession on the left side and then flipping the puck to Austin Brimmer closer to the boards. Konyen circled around the back of the net as Brimmer waited to make the perfect pass and he fed Konyen at the far post for a quick one-timer at 17:30 in the first period to make it 1-0.

Clarkson tied the game shortly after the start of the second period. Following a neutral zone faceoff, the puck was poked into the RIT defensive zone along the left side boards. The first chipped shot by Erik Bargholtz was denied by Jakub Krbecek, but the RIT netminder was unable to cover the puck and it was dropped back beneath the goal line. Bargholtz quickly regained possession and flipped the puck out in front to Luka Sukovic at the right side slot. Before the defense could reset, Sukovic immediately found an open Ryan Bottrill for a one-timer at the bottom of the left circle at 1:33 to tie the game at 1-1.

The Knights' second goal of the contest came off another neutral zone faceoff when the Green and Gold picked up possession on the left side boards. It was again Bottrill that would score the goal for the Knights, as he utilized some patience and fancy footwork to skate through traffic from the left circle through the slot to the right circle, taking advantage of some RIT defensemen screening their goalie on his wrist shot at 8:21. Both Bargholtz and William Bishop were awarded assists off their touches in the neutral zone.

RIT had a chance to tie the game with two power plays late in the period. The best chance for the Tigers came with about a minute remaining when Xavier Lapointe hit the pipe, but the rebound was kicked out of the zone by Matthew Mayich despite playing without a stick, as his equipment had snapped behind the net just a moment before.

The third period opened with another quick goal immediately after the faceoff. In the RIT defensive zone, the faceoff went back toward the Zamboni spot along the boards where Owen Van Steensel won possession and passed the puck in front to a wide open Talon Sigurdson, who patiently waited for Krbecek to react and flipped the puck over the outstretched goaltender to make it 3-1 just 47 seconds into the final frame.

After the third goal it appeared as if the Knights would cruise to the win down the stretch, but the Tigers pulled the goalie for an extra attacker and the strategy quickly paid off. A shot from Xavier Lapointe from the left side just inside of the blue line was deflected by Evan Konyen at 17:46 to pull the Tigers back within one. Clarkson was whistled for a penalty with just two minutes remaining, putting the Knights down two skaters for the final moments of the game. Fortunately for the Knights, they were able to hold off the late rush, allowing only a single shot near the final horn.

Clarkson finished with a 28-21 edge in shots on goal and a 51-47 advantage on shots overall. Both teams were scoreless on the power play (RIT 0-for-4, Clarkson 0-for-2). Shane Soderwall ended with 19 saves for the Knights, and Jakob Krbecek finished with 26 stops for RIT.
