Clarkson Falls Short Despite Late Offensive Push, 5-3

North Andover, MA – Despite dominating in shots and on faceoffs, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team found itself on the short end of a 5-3 decision against an opportunistic Merrimack College squad Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-1-0 on the year, while Merrimack evened itself at 1-1-0. Clarkson hosts University of Connecticut next weekend at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson held significant advantages in total shots (98-26) and shots on goal (46-17) as well as faceoffs (43-19), but the Warriors constantly were in the way and disrupting the Clarkson offense, blocking 29 shots.

Although Clarkson had its chances in the first period, including Rhea Hicks getting denied on the doorstep in the first four minutes, it was Merrimack that would tally twice and put the Knights on their heels early. While on the power play, Maggie Kime was able to convert at 11:47 thanks to some help from a screen in the slot by both a Merrimack player and a Clarkson player, with a possible redirect also being the culprit for the goal. Less than a minute later, the Warriors were able to get an even-strength goal McKenzie Cerrato had a quick redirect off a pass through the slot found her stick at 12:25.

Merrimack made it 3-0 near the midway point of the second. A rebound was sent back to the point created a wrist shot for Neely Hawn, and she took advantage of another screen to sneak one past Aneta Senkova.

Clarkson scored twice in the opening seconds on a pair of power plays to get back into the contest. Sena Catterall was the first to convert just 19 seconds in of the first extra-skater chance, knocking in a rebound at 10:11 to make it 3-1. Kate Manness scored about five minutes later, again on the power play, finishing off a tic-tac-toe passing scheme with a shot from top of the right circle at 15:22.

Although Clarkson was buzzing around with numerous shots, it was Merrimack that scored twice in a stretch of just over a minute in the third period. At 3:43, Stina Sandberg was awarded a goal when a soft pass went off the skate of a Clarkson player and into the net. Just 64 seconds later, Merrimack was opportunistic by picking up the puck off a turnover near the neutral zone and Clarkson blue line, as Jenna Chaplain skated in for a 1-on-1 at 4:47.

The Knights pulled their goaltender with about four minutes to go and scored on the 6-on-5 when Rhea Hicks finished off a rebound following a shot from the left circle, making it 5-3 with a little over three minutes remaining. Though Clarkson continued to have chances, the Knights couldn't get any closer.

The Knights went 2-for-5 on the power play and scored once more while up a skater late in the game and Merrimack was 1-for-2 on the power play. Lauren Lyons played well for the Warriors, making 43 saves, while Aneta Senkova had 12 stops for Clarkson.
