Clarkson Takes 20-Game Unbeaten Streak to Penn State

At 3-0-1 on the year and unbeaten in its last 20 games (18-0-2) the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team has set the tone for another promising campaign in 2017-18. Defending National Champions, the Golden Knights, guided by 10th-year head coach Matt Desrosiers and assistants Britni Smith and Tony Maci, will look to continue their roll with a non-league series against Penn State in University Park, PA this weekend. The Knights face off against the Nittany Lions on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and again on Saturday at Pegula Ice Arena beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Clarkson is coming off a sweep of Bemidji State in its home-opening weekend at Cheel Arena. The Green and Gold blanked the Beavers 2-0 on Friday and held off the visitors 5-4 on Saturday in their first ever meetings with the WCHA foe.

  • The Knights last suffered a loss on January 20, 2017, falling to Cornell 2-1 at Cheel. Clarkson later went on to defeat the Big Red in the ECAC Hockey Tournament Championship game (1-0) and in the NCAA Quarterfinal game (3-1) both in Potsdam.
  • Clarkson has not lost a non-league game since, falling to Wisconsin 4-1 at Cheel on October 15, 2016. The Knights more than made up for that setback by defeating the Badgers 3-0 in last year's NCAA Frozen Four Championship game.
  • The Knights have not lost a road game since dropping a 2-1 non-league game at St. Lawrence on October 7, 2016. Clarkson will play a home-and-home series with the Saints next weekend, and raise their 2017 NCAA Championship Banner prior to the 3pm game on Saturday, October 21.
  • For the second consecutive week freshman Elizabeth Giguere has been selected as ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. The right wing scored a goal in both wins against Bemidji State over the weekend. Giguere tallied Clarkson's second goal in Friday's 2-0 win over the Beavers and netted the game-winner in the 5-4 triumph on Saturday. She is the Golden Knights' leading goal scorer with three tallies and also adds one assist.
  • Shea Tiley, who has started the last 17 games in the Clarkson goal, recorded her 25th career shutout in Friday's 2-0 victory over Bemidji State with a 15 save-effort. She posts a .939 save percentage and a 1.47 goals against average playing every minute this season, and holds a career record of 82-20-14 on an all-time save percentage of .934 and GAA of 1.45.
  • Clarkson, which lost through graduation two of the top scorers in program history - Cayley Mercer '17 and Genevieve Bannon '17, has receieved a balanced offensive effort with nine different goal scorers through the first four games. Thirteen different Knights have recorded at least a point for the Knights, who are rated ninth in the country in scoring offense, averaging 3.25 goals per game.
  • The Knights are tied for fifth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 1.50 goals per game.
  • The Knights' top returning scorer, junior Loren Gabel has a team-high five points on two goals and three assists. She tallied a goal and an assist in Saturday's win over Bemidji State. Gabel is zeroing in on the century mark with 74 career points (42-32) through 85 games.
  • Clarkson senior captain Savanah Harmon leads the current Golden Knights in career scoring with 82 points (24-58) through 123 games. Harmon, who has a pair of power-play tallies this season, is looking to join Erin Ambrose '16 as the only other defenseman in Clarkson's 100-point Club.
  • Freshman Avery Mitchell will certainly remember her first career point for the Knights, scoring the game-winning goal in the 2-0 victory over Bemidji State.
  • Senior forward Amanda Titus and junior defenseman Emma Keenan lead Clarkson in plus/minus at +5 each.
  • Clarkson is 2-0-0 all-time against Penn State having swept the Nittany Lions 4-2, and 2-1 at Cheel Arena to start the 2016-17 campaign.  Juniors Rhyen McGill and Josiane Pozzebon and sophomore Michaela Pejzlová scored goals in those games.
