Second Half Goals Send Knights Past Engineers

Potsdam, N.Y. - Two second-half goals in quick succession lifted the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to a 2-0 Liberty League win over RPI, Saturday afternoon.

Following the victory, the Knights improve to 6-3-3 overall, 3-2-2 in conference play. The team returns to Hantz Field on Tuesday when they host Skidmore at 6 p.m.

The first chance of the game fell to Daniel Medina just over four minutes in as a pass played across the 18 yard box from the right wing bounced through a crowd before being struck well over the cross bar by the senior and out of play. Neither team managed to create much of a scoring chance through the remainder of the half with the Clarkson defense limiting RPI to just two shots with neither of them finding the target.

Clarkson started on the front foot in the second half with Morgan Burke coming close with a header in the 48th minute following a long throw-in from Tayte Wong that flew just over the crossbar. Carter Kladstrup made his first stop in the 60th minute making a stop off a Matt Schlotterbeck shot following an Engineer corner kick for the senior's limited action in goal.

Into the 75th minute, the Golden Knights found the breakthrough in the contest following a set-piece play from the left wing. Zach Ruthfield took control of the service to the danger area in front of goal, placing a pinpoint cross into the path of Jay Jezioro who redirected the ball past the Engineer keeper for 1-0.

Clarkson wouldn't be forced to wait long for a second when a corner in the 77th minute led to a desired insurance goal for the Green and Gold. Burke again managed to get on a skied clearance by the RPI defense, as his header dropped to Josh Baraka who climbed above his defender to head the ball into the right corner of the goal from just outside the six yard box to make it 2-0.

Jack Grace nearly netted a third in the 79th minute when the freshman picked up a loose ball in midfield and after taking a touch sent a shot attempt from just inside the half field line towards goal. The shot forced the Engineer keeper to backpedal quickly and looked to be headed over him and into the net before striking the top of the crossbar and going out of play.

Neither side would threaten the other in front of goal through the remainder of the game as Clarkson was content to possess the ball in the corners of the field to run out the clock for an important Liberty League win.

Kladstrup made just one save in goal for the Knights while Antonio Spina was not credited with a save for the Engineers. As a team Clarkson doubled up RPI in shots (12-6) and shots on goal (2-1). The Knights also held an advantage in corners with seven compared to five for RPI. Burke (4), Medina (3), Baraka (2), Jezioro (1), Grace (1) and Paul Rolland (1) all accounted for Clarkson's shot attempts.
