Pair of Power Play Goals and Late Empty Netter Gives Knights 5-2 Win Over 8th-Ranked North Dakota

Potsdam, NY – Two goals separated by less than two minutes gave the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team an early lead that it would never relinquish as the Golden Knights earned their second win over a top-10 team with a 5-2 victory against North Dakota on Friday night at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-3 on the year while the Fighting Hawks fell to 3-2 on the year. The two teams will match up once again on Saturday night.

Clarkson won the battle of shots in the first period by more than doubling up North Dakota, but it was the visitors that would get on the scoreboard first. Just as a 4-on-4 had concluded and the two men coming out of the penalty box were making a switch, North Dakota got into the Clarkson zone when Ben Strinden went from the opposite blue line and eventually dropped a pass back to David Klee. Strinden followed by filling the space in front of the net, receiving a pass from Klee for a goal right on the doorstep at 4:23.

Clarkson rallied for a pair of goals past the media timeout, the first coming even strength and the second on the power play. After the puck was dug out of the corner for a breakout, the Knights were able to keep an errant puck in the zone thanks to Ryan Bottrill winning the race to the boards near the left circle. He sent a pass back to Ty Brassington at the left point and he took a quick shot on the North Dakota cage. Owen Van Steensel was there for the rebound and made one quick maneuver to clear some space and beat Gibson Homer stick side to make it 1-1. Only 1:44 later, the Knights gained the lead, scoring shortly just 16 seconds into the power play. Tate Taylor's first shot was saved and Luka Sukovic's attempt was also stopped by the North Dakota goalie, but Sukovic stuck with the play and knocked in his own rebound to make it 2-1 at 14:06.

The Green and Gold extended their lead to 4-1 in the second period thanks to a greasy goal barely 90 seconds in and then a quick power play marker near the halfway point of the frame. Clarkson dumped the puck into the North Dakota zone, but the bouncing puck made it difficult for a quick clear or counter, and the Knights took advantage. Talon Sigurdson didn't get all of his attempt with a soft back hand near the left circle, and the puck never made it all the way through the traffic in front. That turned out to work in Clarkson's favor, as the puck bounced around in the slot before Tristan Sarsland skated in and lifted the puck over the left shoulder of Homer for a score at 1:38.

Roughly 10 minutes later the Knights scored before North Dakota could set up its defense on the penalty kill. Luka Sukovic won the faceoff at the right circle and the puck slid back to Adrian Misaljevic at the top of the circle and he quickly passed it over to Tate Taylor for a one-timer at the top of the left circle, scoring only four seconds into the power play and putting the tally at 4-1.

North Dakota responded with a quick power play score of its own, though it took the Hawks 11 seconds to get on the board after the faceoff. From the left circle, Mac Swanson sent a pass out to the point for Abram Wiebe, who quickly located Will Zellers all by himself at the dot of the right circle, and Zellers delivered a one-timer to pull North Dakota back to within two.

Though the Hawks tilted the ice towards the Clarkson zone for much of the third period, it did not result in many shots on goal. North Dakota had a 20-11 leads in total attempts, though Clarkson actually came out on top in terms of shots on goal at 6-5. The Hawks had an excellent chance with six minutes to go in the period when Dylan James was in close at the bottom of the left circle, but his try was kicked away by Clarkson netminder Shane Soderwall. North Dakota pulled its goal with roughly 3:30 to go, only to see a handful of opportunities come up empty. Clarkson iced the game with a near icing that found the back of the empty net with just over a minute remaining as Erik Bargholtz fired a shot from the slot in front of his own net down the rink and the puck stayed inside the right post for an insurance goal.

Clarkson finished 2-for-4 on the power play while the Hawks went 1-for-5. Clarkson also ended up with a 29-20 edge in shots on goal, though North Dakota led in total attempts at 55-50. Soderwall had 18 saves and Homer finished 24 stops.
