Knights Double Up Merrimack in Season-Opener, 6-3

North Andover, MA – A tight game through two periods turned into a three-goal victory as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team found the back of the net three times in the third period to open up the 2025-26 season with a 6-3 victory over Merrimack College on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights and Merrimack will face one another again at 4:00 pm on Saturday.

It was a team effort for the Knights on the score sheet, as six different players scored a goal and 11 players had at least one point, with only Rhea Hicks, Lara Beecher, and Manon le Scodon notching multiple points in the contest.

It took only 90 seconds for the Golden Knights to break the seal on the 2025-26 season, as the Green and Gold went on an odd-player rush to get the puck into the Merrimack defensive zone. Although that initial push did not result in a clean look at the net, the puck went wide to the left side and was collected by Sara Manness. From the left circle Manness sent a pass to the right point for Morgan Walton. The first-year collegian chose to put one on net, and there was enough traffic to make for a difficult view for goaltender Adreanna Doucette. Walton's shot deflected off a Merrimack defender and past another Clarkson player providing a screen just outside the crease to put the Knights up 1-0 early.

Roughly seven minutes clicked off the clock before the Warriors mustered a shot on goal, but shortly thereafter the home team converted. Clarkson was attempting to keep the puck in the Merrimack defensive zone, but the puck just flipped over the defense at the blue line, allowing the Warriors to break out the other way. A one-timer attempt by Stina Sandberg went wide, but Sandberg maintained possession near the end line and passed the puck into the slot for Emma Pfeffer. A spinning attempt in close was stopped by Holly Gruber, but the rebound found the stick of Avery Anderson, who finished off the play at 7:56 to tie the score 1-1.

Merrimack had a chance on the power play in the final five minutes of the period, but most of that extra skater chance was in Clarkson's favor, as the Knights outshot the Warriors 4-0, with two attempts on goal, while on the penalty kill.

Much like the first period, the Knights took little time scoring once the second stanza began. Following an icing call against the Knights, Clarkson won the faceoff and quickly went the other direction. Manon le Scodan had a 2-on-2 rush going down the ice, but Merrimack filled the spots and would not allow the first-year to provide a centering pass for her teammate at the top of the slot. Instead, she dropped the puck back to Andrea Trnkova, and the transfer converted from the point with a wrist shot just 84 seconds after the initial faceoff of the period.

A few minutes later, icing put the puck in the Merrimack defensive end. Twice off faceoffs, Clarkson took quick wrist shots that were smothered by Doucette. However, the third time, the Knights used a little patience with an extra pass to Lara Beecher, and the senior transfer snuck a shot just underneath the crossbar at the 6:00 mark.

Just as Clarkson had a similar goal at the start of the second, so did Merrimack, as the Warriors converted shortly after a break. Right off the faceoff, a tip from the slot caused a bit of a scrum in front, and McKenzie Cerrato was able to pull the Warriors within one at 11:38. Less than five minutes later, the Warriors were able to tie the game while on the power play. Although Clarkson was able to keep Merrimack from putting together much in the way of offense while on their second player-advantage opportunity, the Warriors were able to convert with only 10 seconds left on the power play. Merrimack was able to keep the puck in the zone and an extra pass from the top of the right circle to the bottom of the left circle allowed Emma Pfeffer to slide one through at 16:18, tying the game up at 3-3.

Clarkson began the third period on the power play, and while the Knights didn't score while up a skater, the team did use the opportunity to kick start its offense. As the penalty on Merrimack expired, Lara Beecher took a couple of shots in close on Doucette, and the second rebound found the stick of Manon le Scodan, who finished the play off just two minutes into the third.

While Merrimack always seemed to have an answer in the first two periods, it was the Knights that pulled away. Midway through the third, the Knights picked up a key goal as Rhea Hicks gained possession when the puck leaked out of a scrum along the left side boards. Hicks pushed a pass out to Megan McKay near the top of the right circle, and a wrist shot found some empty space to make it 5-3.

Clarkson tacked on an insurance goal late in the third. A turnover in the neutral zone saw Reese Logan make a steal and then bring the puck into the Merrimack zone. Logan quickly found Raedyn Spademan in the slot, and Spademan snuck the puck low and past Doucette at 16:26 for a 6-3 Clarkson advantage.

The Knights finished with significant margins in shots on goal (36-21), total shots (67-37) and wins on faceoffs (44-22). Hicks was dominant at the dot, winning 20 of her 25 faceoff chances. Holly Gruber ended with saves and Doucette had 30 stops for the Warriors.
